ABOUT THE BOOK
Okinba Launko is a pen name of Femi Osofisan, a distinguished literary figure who has won multiple awards, both local and international, including the first Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) Literature award in 1983 and the Thalia Prize from the International Association of Theatre Critics in 2016.
The Best of Times is a compilation of three novellas: Kolera Kolej, Ma’ami and Cordelia. All three are preoccupied with the themes that Osofisan is now majorly known for in his literary career: political criticism, depravity and corruption, social decadence etc., all written in his typically humorous and dramatic manner. In Kolera Kolej” there is a satirical portrayal of a university unable to deal with a sudden cholera outbreak. The authorities foolishly try to escape from the responsibility of taking charge and ending it: the Prime Minister grants the school autonomy, the vice-chancellor suddenly goes on a sabbatical … Osofisan shows us that when it matters most, those who are in the position to do something are unable to do anything. Ma’ami tells the story of a mother and her relationship with her son. She loves him greatly and tries to protect him from his Machiavellian father, who is willing to go to any extent to achieve his dark objectives. Cordelia is the dramatic portrayal of a lecturer in a shaky marriage, which affects his career negatively. Soon he is embroiled in a crisis involving a young woman whose father has just led a successful coup in the nation, and has to explain why a military force not sent by her father has come and taken her away. The stories pull you into an interesting, imaginative world that only a writer of Osofisan’s pedigree is capable of creating.
‘Kolera Kolej is a satirical novel which presents the comedy of politics in a style that is brilliantly funny and reveals a penetrating insight into the human weaknesses that too often affect the conduct of public affairs. Underlying the satire however is a critical examination of African politics, a deeply serious concern of the state of the political and social condition of collective life on the continent.’
